Pyro Pipe

Building a Pyro Pipe is easy, the only thing you need is about a coffee cup of coffee creamer, a flame, some kind of funnel, and a small hose. Below a picture of the finished prototype. Click on the picture to see a close up. As you can see I have used the following materials to build the first version of the Pyro Pipe:

  • a cardboard pipe
  • an old plastic bottle
  • a foot pump
  • a torch
  • and last but not least: coffee creamer

I won’t waste time to tell you how to put it together, after you have had a good look at the picture you probably will be able to figure it out all by yourself. If not send me an .  Well once you have a finshed product, it’s time to test it. Take a look at the movie below.

If you are planning to build a Pyro Pipe make sure that, when you start testing, you don’t do it to close to the windows, like I did. Why? Well ask my wife. She had to wash to windows about three times before they were even close to clean.

As you might have noticed, it’s just a prototype, and I’m very pleased with the results. The next step will be building a high pressure device which will produce flames that are at least 10 meters in height. Why? Because it’s fun and my kids love it!

Pyro Pipe II

In the meanwhile I have been building an enhanced version of the Pyro Pipe, the Pyro Pipe II.  This version is equipped with a high pressure tank and a release valve. The photo on the left shows the disassembled transportable device. The movie below shows the first test results. If you have played the movie you will see that there is no huge flame.

Yes, I was also slightly disappointed that I did not get to see a big flame. The coffee creamer got airborne though and reached a height between 3 and 4 meters. I call this promising. The problem that I’m facing is that the torch that is used to ignite the cloud of coffee creamer is extinguished by the coffee creamer. So, the stuff I would like to see burning extinguishes the flame with which I would like to ignite the flammable stuff. I get this odd feeling; it feels like I have built a fire extinguisher.

Analyses of the pictures below tell me that I should do something with the position of the torch. What exactly is not clear to me yet. As you can see in the second frame, the torch almost completely disappears into the coffee creamer.

Check back regularly to see if I got it working.
